An 18 year-old beating a 51 year-old incumbent. That's some kind of anti-incumbent vote.

Why is it so difficult to beat an incumbent?
For example, in 2002, 98% of incumbents held onto their seats of the House seats. Their campaigns cost many millions.
And, 85% of the Senate held onto their seats.
The reason is simple.
These seats are so coveted, and the big money donors (special interests) keep them in office. We don't see all that is bestowed onto these bought-and-paid-for incumbents.
And, some theorize that the big money donors also help finance a challenger if that challenger has a chance of winning. That way, they will control both, no matter who wins. Politicians are too beholding to these big money donors. Money in politics makes government rotten.
And, why do you suppose incumbents don't want campaign finance reform ?
Why do incumbents not support election reform ?
Why do incumbents block access to 3rd and independent parties ?
We all know what the problem is.
What kind of democracy is it when some that abuse vast wealth, control incumbents?
Government should not be for sale.
But it is.
The voters, could change that if they want to.
All they have to do is what they should have been doing all along.
Vote Out Incumbents for Democracy.
