WWIII

So, the buzz in the blogosphere is that we're on the brink of WWIII. What do you think? Is another World War breaking out? Will the US get sucked into it? Or, has it already started, and we just don't know it yet?

Motivating Factors?

We recently hit a bit of a snag here at Vote Out Incumbents for Democracy. I've been thinking a lot about this, and other things I've been witnessing in the realms of my personal life, and have found myself wondering a lot about the difference between wanting something and desiring it. The difference I see is how much effort one is willing to put forth to acheive the objective at hand.

Memorial Day

Memorial Day is a federal holiday to commemorate the many brave soldiers who have given their lives for our freedom. While, contemporarily, it has been turned into an excuse for a sale, I ask you all to take a moment to remember the brave soldiers who have given their lives for this nation and for you.

Border Security

What do you think? Will sending 6000 national guard to our Southern Border to provide administrative and logistical support to the Border Patrol really secure that border?

Will it make a dent in illegal immigration?

Will Congress' foot the bill for Bush's plan or will they see it as a waste of tax dollars?

Electoral College???

How will the Electoral College affect anti-incumbent voting?

Here is an interesting historical perspective on the Electoral College:

In order to appreciate the reasons for the Electoral College, it is essential to understand its historical context and the problem that the Founding Fathers were trying to solve. They faced the difficult question of how to elect a president in a nation that:

* was composed of thirteen large and small States jealous of their own
rights and powers and suspicious of any central national government

* contained only 4,000,000 people spread up and down a thousand miles of
Atlantic seaboard barely connected by transportation or communication
(so that national campaigns were impractical even if they had been
thought desirable)

* believed, under the influence of such British political thinkers as Henry
St John Bolingbroke, that political parties were mischievous if not
downright evil, and

* felt that gentlemen should not campaign for public office (The saying
was "The office should seek the man, the man should not seek the
office.").

How, then, to choose a president without political parties, without
national campaigns, and without upsetting the carefully designed balance
between the presidency and the Congress on one hand and between the
States and the federal government on the other?

In this context, we come up with this very interesting question:
How is it that the Electoral College is used to maintain the two-party system's strangle-hold on American politics?

What can a voter do?

It's is my opinion that to ensure our government is successfully OF, BY, and FOR the people we rely on three key factors. We need a well-informed, active and effective constituency. VOID hopes to address each of these factors by informing and activated voters, and through our votes peacefully forcing the government to become responsive to us. However, this is a long-term goal and patience, while a virtue many people admire, is not always possible.

H. Res. 688

Welcome to WhatDoYaThink, our new column where we hope to get your opinions on the issues that matter to you, our readers, our supporters, the voters!

I recently found out about a new resolution that is being considered in the House of Representatives called H. Res. 688. Basically, with this piece of legislation our representatives would require themselves to make any legislation they're considering available on-line for 72 hours before they're allowed to vote it through or vote it down. Ideally, this would give us, the voters, the opportunity to weigh in on the matter before Congress decides on the legislation they are considering.
